Artist Statement

My work is about play, mutability, touch, mysterious narrative, miniature worlds and fantastical realities. Ultimately, I believe that objects have the power to hold memory and to connect us though time. I hope to be part of that connection with my work.

Stop thinking about art works as objects, and start thinking about them as triggers for experiences.

Bio

The first time I fell in love with art I was a child standing before the very large impressionist painting Paris Street; Rainy Day, by Gustave Caillebotte at the Art Institute of Chicago. I think I was most impressed (haha) by the sheer size of it. The figures in the foreground appear as though they are about to walk right out of the frame into the gallery. My next serious moment of love was more hands on, when I signed up for a ceramics class in high school. That sealed the deal.

So, in college I kept taking pottery classes. When it came time to declare a major, I had so many art classes that getting a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Art from Southern Methodist University) seemed obvious. Once I had graduated, I realized that I should have been a better student! I didn’t really know how to make a living at clay. I waited tables. I waited lots of tables. After about five years, I realized I needed to go back to school, and, more importantly, I needed to be a much better student. In 2008, I earned a Master of Fine Art, specialization in ceramics, from the University of North Texas. Currently, I am an Associate Professor of Art in Waco, Texas. I am pleased to say that through it all, I find myself still falling over and over in love with art, with clay, and with ideas.
